“Wait… what??? Pantone… Ultra Violet???”
That was my first response when I saw that Pantone had selected “Ultra Violet” as THE color of the year for 2018.
Because the purple tones are not colors I naturally gravitate to [hello sage, and grey!!!], I was kinda surprised by the choice.
[and secretly, I was a little sad that greenery – the pantone color of the year for 2017 – was getting shunted out, cause I have totally fallen in love with it!]
But then I took a closer look at why it was chosen to represent the color for 2018…
Pantone ultra violet just makes sense!

“Inventive and imaginative, Ultra Violet lights the way to what is yet to come.”
A dramatically provocative and thoughtful purple shade, PANTONE 18-3838 Ultra Violet communicates originality, ingenuity, and visionary thinking that points us toward the future.
So much sense, that it inspired me to want to create something for myself.
So before being tempted to redo my own brand, and slip this exciting color in…
I thought I’d just have a little fun with it [and rather tempt you lol] 😜
Naturally, I dived head first into creating a moodboard to represent all that I see ultraviolet doing for 2018.

Having enjoyed the settling, growing feeling that came from greenery [our color for 2017],
it only makes sense that we are looking to expand this year,
having come from a murky place, we are looking to the future in anticipation of our “what next”,
Leaning into our spiritual side a bit more, and pushing the creative boundaries…
It’s time to build something new, something fresh, something exciting.
Ultraviolet is a strong color to represent all of that [and more].
So what does Pantone Ultra Violet mean for branding in 2018?
I think that we’re going to see a lot of purple in this next year
Expect to see purple all over the shops…
// sprinkled on clothing [side note to self: must look for an Ultra Violet scarf!!!],
// splashes of purple on mugs, pillows, and probably even Lounge suites [for the brave and bold],
// and how about a Ultra Violet Feature wall anyone???
// and I wonder if blueberries are going to start trending as a food group! Lol
So how will it play out in branding?
I think that Ultra Violet is quite a versatile color for branding… and it will be exciting to see the palettes that will come from it!
In terms of the type of businesses that will embrace purple…
I think that if the brand is
// creative,
// imaginative,
// punchy or edgy,
// spiritual, or
// forward thinking
then this color could definitely work for them!
Now that I’m thinking about all these options… I’m itching to go play some more!
I will hopefully be able to show you some of the different, exciting, and fresh uses for purple in the upcoming weeks!
Until then, watch this space… I think that Pantone’s Ultra Violet is definitely a trend color to watch out for in 2018!
